Chefchaouen, the blue city

The Blue Pearl Chefchaouen, with its distinctive blue-washed streets set against the backdrop of the Rif Mountains, unfolds as a visual masterpiece. The tranquility of this "Blue Pearl" is complemented by the surrounding landscapes, offering travelers a serene escape.

Our curated experiences in Chefchaouen allow visitors to explore the vibrant medina, engage with local artisans, and immerse themselves in the unique blend of Berber, Arab, and Andalusian influences that shape the city's cultural tapestry.

The city was named the “Blue Pearl of Morocco” and “Paradise on the Mountain”, following its beauty and situated on the slopes of the Riff Mountains. The name Chefchaouen is derived from the word “ashwane” meaning “horns” in the Berber language, the language of the earliest inhabitants of North Africa. The city was named after the shape of the mountains at the top of the city, which resemble a pair of goat horns.

Architecture enthusiasts will revel in the blue-painted buildings. It is a popular tourist attraction due to the relaxed atmosphere of the city that makes it very attractive to visitors and because it is a shopping destination that offers many handicrafts that cannot be found elsewhere in Morocco, authentic markets, a variety of boutique stores offering mainly clothing, Jewelry, bags, Moroccan style housewares, carpets and of course Moroccan shoes and slippers in a variety of colors.

Tetouan, the white dove

Hidden in the rugged Rif Mountains between Tangier and Fes, the city of Tetouan is one of the most picturesque cities in Morocco.

A UNESCO-listed city, invites travelers to step into a living testament of Morocco's historical richness. The intricate architecture of the medina, a blend of Islamic and Andalusian styles, showcases the city's diverse heritage.

Through CrossAtlanTrip's itineraries, travelers discover the vibrant Medina Square, explore traditional craftsmanship, and witness the fusion of Moroccan, Arab, and Jewish cultural influences that define Tetouan's unique character.

The Rif Mountains

Taking advantage of its geolocalisation, Tetouan is also a paradise for walkers. The surrounding mountains are criss-crossed with paths that offer pleasant hiking opportunities. To explore them is to discover another, more hidden Morocco, that of the Rif mountain range.

The Rif is the most northerly of Morocco's mountain chains. There are some good hikes to be had in the region. To the immediate east, trees cloak the limestone peaks as you climb towards the central Mount Tidiquin, the highest in the Rif range at 2,448 metres (8,000ft). Squat holm- and cork-oaks give way to high cedar forests and the kif plantations of Ketama. The further east you travel, the redder the hue of the mountain range, a change that strikes the traveller on the road to Al Hoceima where the terrain becomes denuded and barren.
